Learning · Problem: My prompt gives weak answers

Why does AI give me weak answers, and how do I write a better prompt?

Most weak answers come from missing information, not a weak AI. A strong prompt covers seven things: a role, the objective, the audience, the context, the direction or tone, the rules, and the output you want. You can also ask AI to interview you first, so it collects the missing details before it answers.

When to use this

The answer is too general, too long, off target, or you keep rewriting the prompt without improving it.

Copy this prompt

Build my own version
I want a better result from AI. Here is my current prompt:
"""
[paste your prompt]
"""

Before rewriting it, ask me up to 5 short questions to find what is missing. Check for:
- Role: who should you act as?
- Objective: what exactly do I need?
- Audience: who is it for?
- Context: what background do you need?
- Direction: what tone and style?
- Constraints: what to avoid, and any limits?
- Output: what format and length?

After I answer, write the improved prompt and explain in 3 bullets what you changed.

Replace each [bracket] with your own details. Works in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Meta AI.

Example

What you type in

Current prompt: "write a post about our new product"

What you can expect back (shortened)

Q1: What is the product and what problem does it solve? Q2: Who is it for? Q3: Which platform? Q4: What should readers do next? Q5: Any words or claims to avoid?

Common mistake

Making the prompt longer instead of clearer. Length does not help; missing information does.

Better follow-up prompt

Turn the improved prompt into a reusable template with [brackets] for the parts that change.
